Philosopher King of Mithila
King Janaka is a regal figure, rarely seen in public except on holy days to the goddess Sarasvati. When he is seen, his beard is always carefully oiled and ringleted and he always bears his stepped crown and staff of office.
Although the King of Mithila, and Lord of Videha is an honorary priest of Sarasvati, he wisely keeps himself aloof from the hierarchy and politics of her temple, focusing instead on governing his secular realm. King Janaka presides over the Council of the Wise that governs the Kingdom and is commonly called the “Philosopher-King” of Mithila for his policies and laws advocating the advancement of knowledge.
